Re: How explanations of mental illness affect stigma
I find your post very insightful. I agree with your view that standards of education and interpersonal skills have risen, making it harder for everybody to participate in society.
I think the marginal or economically disadvantage will be progressively be worse off. Sadly in a capitalist environment it's survival of the fitness.

Re: How explanations of mental illness affect stigma
While explanations may influence optimism/negativity,I don't believe they can have any positive effect on stigma reduction.
People stigmatise not due to the percieved blame or helplessness of the person in regard to their condition, they stigmatise due to the percieved “weirdness“ of poor mental heath manifestations.
They stigmatise due to fear, ignorance, having superiority attitudes or their own insecurities.

Re: How explanations of mental illness affect stigma
I sat on my front porch one balmy summer night, watching two reddish coloured lights high in the sky. They were ducking and darting about each other like kids playing tag. After about 20 minutes, they zoomed off.
I had to suppose that they might be flying saucers.
I bought the newspaper the next day: Nothing. My friend called, and I told her what I had witnessed and asked her, how, In a city of just over a million people, no-one else had seen them or reported them?
My friend said that it was highly likely that other people had seen them too, and that they might have convinced themselves that they would have to be crazy to think that and even crazier to tell someone else.
Maybe if we all admit that we are all crazy to whatever degree?

Re: How explanations of mental illness affect stigma
Hi all,
Here's another article about MI attitudes on TC, I'll try to post the link https://theconversation.com/crazed-killer-headlines-defy-facts-of-crime-and-mental-impairment-30919
I found it interesting and somewhat enlightening. But I disagree with the correct process as posited by the author.
I've written a comment in response, the others seemed quite demonising. Thought you might want to take a look.
Kind regards,
Kristin

Re: How explanations of mental illness affect stigma
Hi,
Another article from TC, about emloyment and MI. This one is much better than the last - with the author clearly having some insight into MI; and, mostly, much more compassionate comments.
Kind regards,
Kristin
